Big days from Brooke Birosik and Jenny Rizzo gave the Penn State field hockey team a victory in its regular-season finale Friday.
Birosik accounted for all the goal-scoring, while Rizzo made a career-high 15 saves to preserve the 3-2 win over Northwestern at Lakeside Field.
The hat trick was the first of Birosik’s career. Birosik started the scoring in the seventh minute, and netted her third, and the deciding goal, in the 46th minute.
Penn State was outshot 22-11, but Rizzo was up to the task.
“Jenny was just absolutely outstanding today,” coach Char Morett-Curtiss said. “It was a career game for her — saving a (penalty) stroke — she had an amazing game. You felt like she really took charge of her circle and was ready for everything. She was confident in everything she did.”
Winners of three of the last four, the Nittany Lions next head to the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 5-8 at Indiana.
