UNIVERSITY PARK Purdue scored two runs on a Penn State error in the eighth inning to lock up a 7-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park and sweep a three-game weekend series.
The loss extended Penn State’s slide to 10 games. The Nittany Lions (5-18, 0-6 Big Ten), who made three errors Sunday, have not won since March 9 at Houston Baptist.
Jake Hansen’s grounder with runners on second and third bases was thrown away to allow both runners to score for the deciding runs.
After an early two-run single from Penn State’s Alex Farkes, Penn State trailed 5-2 before rallying, with a Steve Snyder triple and a pair of walks setting up a two-run single from Luis Montesinos. An error tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Snyder, Montesinos and Farkes each had two hits, and Greg Welsh (0-2) allowed nine hits and seven runs — three earned — with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
