The Big Ten announced its men’s and women’s Preseason Players of the Year and all-conference teams Wednesday.
Maryland’s Melo Trimble was selected as the men’s Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by the media heading into his sophomore season. Trimble started all 35 games and averaged a team-high 16.2 points per game last year for the Terrapins, who went 28-7. The guard was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine, Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes and Purdue’s A.J. Hammons were also unanimous picks.
Indiana teammates James Blackmon and Yogi Ferrell, Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff, Maryland’s Jake Layman, Michigan’s Caris LeVert and Wisconsin’s Bronson Koenig round out the all-conference team.
Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell was named the women’s Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by the coaches and media. Mitchell led the country in scoring with 24.9 points per game as a freshman last season. She was the Big Ten’s Co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
Mitchell was also a unanimous selection to Preseason All-Big Ten teams by the coaches and media.
Maryland was chosen as the league favorite by the coaches and media, with Ohio State picked to finish second. The coaches ranked Michigan State third, and the media chose Northwestern third.
Michigan State’s Aerial Powers was a unanimous All-Big Ten pick by the coaches and media.
Maryland teammates Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Minnesota’s Rachel Banham, Nebraska’s Rachel Theriot, Northwestern’s Nia Coffey, Ohio State’s Ameryst Alston and Rutgers’ Kahleah Copper were All-Big Ten selections by the coaches and media. Coffey was a unanimous pick by the coaches.
Iowa’s Ally Disterhoft was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team by the coaches, and Michigan State’s Tori Jankoska was chosen to the media’s team.
The Penn State men’s basketball team opens its season Nov. 14 against VMI at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Lady Lions host an exhibition game Nov. 1 against California (Pa.) at 2 p.m. and open their season at home Nov. 13 against Holy Cross.
