Penn State football coach James Franklin’s pledge to “dominate the state” of Pennsylvania in recruiting has seemingly extended eastward.
The Nittany Lions added a second top prospect from New Jersey to the 2015 recruiting class when Union Hill guard Steven Gonzalez committed to Penn State on Saturday, according to multiple recruiting sites.
Gonzalez, listed at 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, is rated as the No. 3 prospect in New Jersey by 24/7 Sports. He joins wide receiver Juwan Johnson, New Jersey’s No. 2 overall recruit, according to the same recruiting site. Gonzalez is considered a four-star recruit by 24/7 Sports and Rivals.com and is listed as a three-star prospect by Scout.com.
After taking an unofficial visit on Friday, Gonzalez committed shortly after Penn State’s eighth spring practice the next day. He is the first guard, second offensive lineman and 10th overall commit in the current class. Gonzalez had offers from Boston College, Connecticut, Duke and Louisville, among others. His commitment is non-binding until he signs a National Letter of Intent next February.
