Breaking it down: Grading Penn State by position

It almost feels like Christian Hackenberg has been around for a couple of seasons now. The reality is that he’s just entering his sophomore year under center. But the strong-armed signal caller who came to Penn State from Fork Union Military Academy looked every bit like a weathered veteran carving Wisconsin apart in the season finale last year. Hackenberg can make all the throws, has the athletic ability to move fluidly in the pocket to avoid pressure and has a command of the huddle rarely seen in a player his age. The Nittany Lions will depend on two freshmen — redshirt Michael O’Connor and green rookie Trace McSorley — to provide depth. An injury to Penn State’s star QB is a worst-case scenario due to the inexperience behind him. Grade: B
