Penn State placekicker Sam Ficken and wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton were honored Monday by the Big Ten for their performances in the Nittany Lions’ 26-24 victory against Central Florida in Saturday’s Croke Park Classic in Dublin.
Ficken earned the Special Teams Player of the Week, while Hamilton took Co-Freshman of the Week honors.
Ficken connected on all four of his field goals against UCF, including a game-winning 36-yarder as time expired. The senior co-captain also made kicks of 22, 24 and 34 yards.
Ficken, who is now 11th on Penn State’s career field goals list with 34, received the honor twice last season, in the season opener against Syracuse and the season finale against Wisconsin. He is the first Nittany Lion to boot four field goals in a game since former State College High School standout Collin Wagner did it in 2010 against Temple.
Never miss a local story.
Playing in his first game after being sidelined by an injury last season, Hamilton broke two school freshman records with his 11 catches for 165 yards against the Knights. He broke Maurice Humphrey’s mark of eight catches and Deon Butler’s record of 125 yards.
Hamilton and sophomore Geno Lewis became the eighth Penn State tandem to have 100 receiving yards in the same game and the first pair to top the 150-yard mark. Lewis had eight catches for 173 yards.
Penn State will take on Akron (1-0) in its home opener at noon on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
