Laura Bowman recorded the second hat trick in Penn State women’s hockey history to lead the Nittany Lions to a 5-3 win over No. 6 Mercyhurst on Saturday.
The win completed Penn State’s first sweep in College Hockey America play. The Nittany Lions beat the Lakers 2-1 Friday.
Penn State (10-7-3, 5-4-1 CHA) scored three goals in the third period to seal the win.
“This team is so resilient,” head coach Josh Brandwene said. “Playing the No. 6 team in the country, we never wavered and stuck with the game plan. That was a big-time effort from our hockey team.”
Never miss a local story.
The teams went into the third period tied 2-2.
Hannah Bramm pushed the Nittany Lions ahead 3-2 with a goal just more than four minutes into the period. Mercyhurst’s Emily Janiga found the back of the net to tie the game.
Bowman scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes to play. She added her third goal on an empty net with one second left.
Penn State’s next game is Jan. 3 at home against Ohio State.
