Penn State’s seniors celebrated their final regular-season match at Jeffrey Field with a decisive 5-0 victory over Illinois on Sunday.
Raquel Rodriguez netted a pair of goals while seniors Tani Costa and Maya Hayes joined Mallory Weber in the goal-scoring column. The score for Hayes was her team-leading 16th of the season.
Britt Eckerstrom and Meghan Kaminski combined for five saves and the shutout.
“This is the best Senior Day that I have been a part of,” coach Erica Walsh said. “Every class of seniors is so special and this class has been program-changing. The shutout feels really good. It has been a long time coming. I couldn’t ask for anything more today, everything just came together.”
Weber, Brittany Bassinger and Taylor Schram all had assists in a game matching two of the top offenses in the nation. Entering the weekend, the Nittany Lions were third in goals per game in Division I, while the Illini were fourth.
No. 17 Penn State outshot Illinois 17-8, and the contest marked the eighth time this season the Nittany Lions scored at least four goals in a game.
Illinois lost the nation’s top goal-scorer, Janelle Flaws, to a head injury early in the first half and were without All-American midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo.
Penn State visits Iowa and Big Ten leader Nebraska next weekend.
