Penn State suffered its first-ever loss to Iowa and had its chances of another Big Ten title severely damanged with a 3-2 setback against the Hawkeyes.
Tani Costa scored both Nittany Lions goals, the first on a penalty kick, and Emily Carrollo assisted on the second tally.
Katie Nasenberry and Ashley Catrell had first-half goals for Iowa, and Cloe Lacasse netted the winner in the 75th minute.
The Nittany Lions (12-4-1, 6-3 Big Ten) have the most conference losses in a season in program history and will need a number of events happen to extend their conference record to 16 straight regular-season titles. Penn State is in third place with 18 points.
Nebraska (8-1), Sunday’s opponent, leads with 24 and Michigan (7-1-1) has 22. The Nittany Lions must win twice, the Huskers must lose twice and the Wolverines must have no better than a loss and tie over the final two games for Penn State to get a share of the title.
