State College’s two entries in the District 6 Class AAA Singles Championships were ousted from the tournament Friday.
Matt Wherley and Dan Shull were eliminated before the finals. Shull, a sophomore unseeded for the tournament, lost his opening match 6-1, 6-1 to second-seeded Tom Hulet of Central Mountain, an exchange student from Belgium.
Wherley won his opening match over Ryan Good of Altoona 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. The freshman then lost in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1 to top-seeded Amir Alfakahji of Hollidaysburg.
The early matches were played at the Leopold Rec Center, but the later matches were moved indoors to Procare Health and Fitness, because of rain, onto a carpet surface which was a new experience for Wherley.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” coach Jane Borden said. “They are so young and had such great poise today. They just ran into more experienced and better players. Wherley had a solid first-round win against Good. Amir took control of his match early and looked very comfortable on a surface he trains on regularly. Shull drew Hulet in the first round. Hulet, who is a very solid European player, had an exceptional all-court game.”
