The State College boys’ tennis team knew its season would come to an end, but it might not have expected it so soon.
The top-seeded Little Lions dropped a 3-2 contest to fourth-seed Altoona in the District 6 Class AAA team championships on Monday afternoon to finish the season at 14-2.
“We knew going into this that it would be a very close match,” State College coach Jane Borden said.
State College grabbed an early lead when Sam Wherley secured a singles point with a win over the Mountain Lions’ Jake Colledge 6-3, 6-4. The Little Lions’ No. 2 doubles team of Shreyas Radhakrishna and Lucas Forest put them ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sam Houk and Tyler Rispol.
Never miss a local story.
The best match of the day came at No. 1 singles, with Altoona’s Chad Allendar defeating Dan Shull 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. From there, the Mountain Lions built on the momentum with a singles win at No. 2 with Ryan Good being victorious over Matt Wherley 6-1, 6-4. Altoona’s No. 1 doubles team of Mustafa Ahmed and Matt Eiman picked up the win over Luke Plowden and Enrique del Castillo 6-2, 6-3.
“Altoona is a solid team and is much better than their No. 4 seed and they played well today,” Borden said. “It's been a great season and I hope the guys remember all the good that has happened this spring.”
