Bellefonte spoiled Philipsburg-Osceola’s chance to get a piece of its sixth straight Mountain League softball title as the Lady Red Raiders pounded out 11 hits in a 9-5 victory over the Lady Mounties on Tuesday.
With Bald Eagle Area’s 10-9 loss to Central on Tuesday, P-O needed a win to extend its streak. But, Bellefonte (11-8) took control with a five-run second inning that extended its lead to 6-0. The Lady Red Raiders took advantage of two errors to extend the inning and Tara Baney and Erin Pugh each delivered two-out, two-run singles to cap the outburst.
Baney had two hits and drove in four runs in the contest. Sarah Menna and Liz Linn each added two hits.
“They did a real nice job,” Bellefonte coach Gregg Kohlhepp said of his hitters. “They did a nice job of moving up runners and a nice job of hitting it where it was pitched and taking it where it was supposed to go.”
Baney earned the win and Stevi Confer pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the save.
“It was a great team win for us,” Kohlhepp said. “We have played a lot of games that have been close. I thought today was our best game. We stayed focused and played for each other and when we do that we’re a tough team to beat.”
Kenzie Burge led the Lady Mounties with three hits. Haylee Hayward had a double and a triple and Maggie Peck smacked a solo home run. The Lady Mounties (16-4) committed six errors.
P-O hosts Central Cambria in the opening round of the District 6 Class AA playoffs at 4 p.m. Thursday.
