A pair of goalkeepers posted dueling shutouts Thursday afternoon.
The Bellefonte and Penns Valley girls’ soccer teams played to a 0-0 tie through regulation and two overtime periods.
The Lady Red Raiders (3-1) outshot the Lady Rams 16-4, with keepers Nicole Peggs (Bellefonte) and Kylie Orndorff stopping each of those shots.
“We did about everything we possibly could,” said Lady Raiders coach Stacey Miller, whose team also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. “We had 16 shots on goal, we just couldn’t finish in the back of the net.”
Never miss a local story.
Lady Rams coach Jeff Smucker gave the credit to his back line for the shutout.
“Bellefonte has a tough field to play on because it is short and hard but our defense played well enough to earn their second shutout in a row,” he said. “We had a tough time pulling the trigger on our offensive opportunities and left some good chances out there. Alyssa Denger played the whole 100 minutes at sweeper and did a great job squelching any Bellefonte forays that got through to her.”
