Tyrone edged Penns Valley in a back-and-forth affair and the Golden Eagles now sit atop the Mountain League standings with their 52-50 win Wednesday night.
The Rams (10-3) jumped out to a 14-11 lead and turned it into a 25-20 advantage at halftime. But Tyrone’s defense came up big in the third quarter and held the Rams to just eight points. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles offense began to build steam. Tyrone outscored Penns Valley 32-25 the rest of the way.
Zach Engle, Sean Beamesderfer and Logan Johnson each were in double figures for the Rams with Engle leading the way with 20 points. Johnson scored 14 and Beamesderfer added 11. Tyrone was led by Nathaniel Soellner who scored 24 points. The two teams have alternated wins dating back to the 2012 season and Tyrone leads the series 3-2 since then. The two teams meet again on Feb. 11.
