State College’s Matt Wherley showed why he is the top overall seed in the District 6 Class AAA boys’ tennis singles tournament on Friday at Leopold Park.
Wherley along with teammate Dan Shull advanced to Saturday’s championship match slated for 10:30 a.m. at State College.
“Matt played really well today and handled the weather conditions quite well from the start,” Little Lions coach Jane Borden said. “It took Dan a bit longer to get used to the windy conditions, but once he found his way he was fine. It was a tough day to play and both guys handled the mental challenge quite well.”
Wherley dropped one set in his run to the finals.
He beat Mifflin County’s Will Fox 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and then topped No. 4 seed Sam Sky of Hollidaysburg 6-0, 6-1.
Shull listed as the No. 3 seed topped Hollidaysburg’s Max Sheetz in a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 marathon match and then clinched his spot in the finals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mifflin County’s Matt DeBenedetto, who was the No. 2 seed.
