The State College Spikes were tied heading into the seventh inning, but Williamsport pulled away Wednesday with the 5-2 victory over the Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Four singles and a crucial error led to the Crosscutters’ three-run seventh frame. With two base-runners on, State College pitcher Alex Fagalde committed a throwing error that cleared the bases and gave Williamsport a two-run lead. Two batters later, another single drove in the third run of the inning.
Yariel Gonzalez paced the Spikes with three hits and one run, while both Matt Davis and Edwin Figuera also smacked two hits apiece in the loss.
With the loss, State College is now 40-34 on the season while Williamsport is 36-37. The Spikes were eliminated from the postseason Monday.
Players of the game
Williamsport pitchers Kyle Young and Connor Brogdon: Young picked up the win, and Brodgdon the save — so they both did their part. The two combined to allow just two runs while striking out 11 and walking two. Brogdon was especially effective, striking out five and allowing just two hits over three innings. Young went six innings and scattered eight hits, but surrendered just two runs while striking out six and walking one.
One last chance
Bottom of the ninth: Despite the three-run deficit, State College still put itself in position to force extra innings in the final frame. With base-runners on the corners and with two outs, Scott Hurst faced a full count at the plate — but struck out swinging.
Williamsport Crosscutters at State College Spikes, 7:05 p.m. Thursday: In the final game of the season, Williamsport’s Julian Garcia (3-5, 4.25 ERA) is set to take on a pitcher to be determined from the Spikes.
