State College’s Brian O’Keefe’s shot to center field carried to the warning track and evaded the diving attempt by Mahoning Valley’s Bradley Zimmer.
The ball bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double to even the score with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ronnierd Garcia followed with a line-drive single into center field to score Kenny Peoples-Walls and O’Keefe and give the Spikes their first lead of the game.
State College reliever Nick Lomascolo sealed the Spikes’ 5-3 win with a scoreless ninth at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday night.
Spikes starting pitcher Cody Schumacher gave up three runs on two home runs in six innings. Anderson Gerdel earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
The Scrappers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Mahoning Valley’s Taylor Murphy drilled a two-run home run to right-center field. Two batters later, Yonathan Mendoza sent a towering shot to right field to push the Scrappers’ lead to three runs.
Schumacher settled in from there, allowing just one hit in his final four innings.
The Spikes cut into the deficit in the sixth against Scrappers reliever Ramon Rodriguez, starting with Alex De Leon’s homer to right field. Nick Thompson reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch to bring the Spikes within 3-2.
