UNIVERSITY PARK — Danny Diekroeger turned on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning and lifted it into the right-field bleachers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Diekroeger’s homer accounted for State College’s lone run Saturday night in a 7-1 loss to Auburn. The Spikes’ opportunities were limited offensively as they finished with four hits and went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position.
State College starting pitcher Austin Gomber struck out five and allowed two runs in four innings to take the loss.
Auburn (19-22) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings.
The Spikes (29-13) cut into the lead on Diekroeger’s solo shot in the fourth.
Auburn put the game out of reach with a four-run eighth inning. State College reliever Jacob Booden faced three straight full counts with the bases loaded and one out.
All three ended in a walk to score three runs. Booden went 1 1/3 innings and allowed four runs.
