The State College Spikes appeared to have a victory locked up, but an errant throw with two outs in the ninth inning kept Aberdeen alive.
Ronnierd Garcia fielded a chopper by IronBirds catcher Alex Murphy, but his throw to first went wide and into the tarp to allow the tying run to score. Aberdeen scored four unanswered runs to beat State College 5-4 in 10 innings Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
The IronBirds scored the game-winning run on Jamill Moquete’s triple in the top of the 10th.
Kyle Grana took the loss after allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings.
The Spikes took a 4-1 lead in the sixth after capitalizing on a bases-loaded opportunity.
With one out, Jhohan Acevedo sent a single through the right side of the infield to score Thompson and Raffield and push State College ahead 3-1. Robelys Reyes followed with a foul ball to the left side taken by Aberdeen third baseman Austin Anderson, carrying long enough for Brian O’Keefe to tag and score from third.
The Spikes saw their lead cut to 4-3 in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Anderson.
Garcia’s errant throw allowed the tying run to score with two outs in the top of the ninth.
