The State College Spikes’ slump continued Tuesday night.
The Spikes fell 5-0 to Mahoning Valley at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, extending their season-long losing streak to six games. State College has now dropped 10 of its last 11 games.
State College finished 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Spikes right fielder Nick Thompson went 3 for 4 and was stranded in scoring position three times.
State College starting pitcher Will Anderson struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings. Anderson allowed four runs — two earned — on seven hits to take the loss.
Never miss a local story.
Mahoning Valley took the lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Bradley Zimmer led off with a single, and Francisco Mejia followed with a walk.
Anderson recorded back-to-back strikeouts, but Mahoning Valley’s David Armendariz knocked a single under the glove of diving Spikes first baseman Alex De Leon to score Zimmer.
Zimmer’s two-out single to right field pushed the Scrappers ahead 2-0 in the fifth.
The Scrappers added two runs in the sixth, thanks to an error by Chase Raffield in left field and a bloop single by Yonathan Mendoza.
