Dailyn Martinez and Jacob Evans combined on a two-hitter to lead the State College Spikes to a 5-0 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Friday night at Eastwood Field.
State College has limited Mahoning Valley to a combined six hits in two straight shutouts.
Martinez struck out three, walked two and allowed two hits in seven innings to earn the win. Evans had one strikeout in two scoreless innings of relief in his professional debut.
Casey Grayson went 2 for 4, Thomas Spitz scored two runs and Jose Godoy drove in two runs to lead the Spikes. State College (3-5) finished with seven singles.
Mahoning Valley starter Leandro Linares allowed one run (zero earned) on two hits in five innings to take the loss.
Anthony Santander and Li-Jen Chu accounted for the Scrappers’ two hits.
State College broke a scoreless tie in the fifth.
Spitz singled to left field, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on Godoy’s groundout. State College’s Craig Aikin then led off the sixth with a walk and moved to third on Mike Pritchard’s single. After a popout and a lineout, Aikin scored on a wild pitch to give the Spikes a 2-0 lead.
State College pushed their lead to 5-0 with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by Danny Martin’s two-run single.
The Spikes and Scrappers (3-5) finish their series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
Juan Perez (1-0, 1.80) will be on the mound for the Spikes, while Jared Robinson (0-1, 5.40) will get the start for Mahoning Valley.
