closeSTATE COLLEGE — State College's Scott Glass had a triple and drove in four runs to lift the Little Lion baseball team to a season-opening 10-4 victory Tuesday over Clearfield.
Shawn Regel also had a triple and scored four runs while Jose Texidor (2 RBIs) and Will Pryor (one RBI) each added two hits for the Little Lions (1-0), who took control with five runs in the fourth inning.
Matt Godwin picked up the win for State College, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three over five innings.
Isaac Butler drove in three runs for the Bison.

Bellefonte tops Indian Valley
BURNHAM — Bellefonte had five players with multiple hits en route to downing Indian Valley 8-3 in its season opener Tuesday.
Bellefonte’s Christina Stathes led off the sixth inning with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Red Raiders a 5-3 lead before adding three more runs in the top of the seventh.
In the second, Bellefonte's Danielle Gomola had a run-scoring double and then scored on Brittany Smith's single to give the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead. Bellefonte then added two more runs in the fourth before Indian Valley scored all three of its runs in the fifth, led by Autumn Coffey’s two-run triple.
Multiple hitters for the Lady Raiders were Gomola, Smith, Hannah Cooper, Stathes and Devon Etters, who had a triple.
Raychel DeArmitt earned her first varsity win on the mound over six innings of work while allowing eight hits and three runs.
Lady Rams roll
HUNTINGDON — Kasey Packer smacked three hits, including a pair of doubles, stole four bases and drove in four runs as Penns Valley belted Huntingdon 16-1 in five innings in the season-opener for both teams.
The Lady Rams belted 17 hits and scored in each at-bat in the contest. Katie Deardorff, Rachel Myers, Alisha Jordan, Janelle Welch, Clarissa Keller and Robin Siegenthaler had two hits each. Welch added three stolen bases for Penns Valley, which had 10 stolen bases.
“We were very pleased to come out and hit the ball well,” Penns Valley coach Don Lucas said. “We attacked the ball better than we have in past opening days and we were very aggresive on the basepaths. Some of the younger players played very well.”
Myers allowed four hits, walked three and struck out eight to earn the win.
BEA throttles Tyrone
TYRONE — Jasa Mitchell and Cortney Switzer each tripled while Brooke Klinefelter drove in four runs to lead Bald Eagle Area to a season-opening 14-0 shutout of Tyrone in five innings Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles posted six runs over the first two innings and then blew the game open with a seven-run fourth.
Amber McClure, Klinefelter and Switzer each finished with two hits. Klinefelter added a double.
BEA pitcher Megan Shaw struck out all 10 batters she faced while earning the win over 31/ 3 innings.
P-O runs over Central
MARTINSBURG — Philipsburg-Osceola pitcherChelsea Rexstruck out 10 while tossing a two-hitter Tuesday in the Lady Mounties’ 9-1 triumph in their season opener.
P-O's Chasity Myers had a two out, two-run single in the first to plate Mackenzie Wilson and Taylor Harpster. Leading 2-1 in the fourth, P-O’s Kelci Knepp smacked an RBI double. P-O followed with a four-run fifth led by another Myers two-run single and Katie Carpin's run-scoring double.
Rex,Katie Confer and Kelsey Gonder each added a double in the win.
BOY'S VOLLEYBALL
State College triumphs
SIDMAN — Chris Rose registered 10 digs and served for five aces to lift State College to a 25-14, 25-15, 25-11 victory on Tuesday against Forest Hills.
Andy Foard dished out 22 assists, Krem Demerci had 10 kills and Cliff Rupert added six blocks for the Little Lions (1-0).
“It was a really good start and a bit of a measuring stick,” State College coach Kim-Li Kimel said. “We were able to get quality time for sophomoresDaniel Pons andPatrick Moore.It was also good because we were able to see what we need to work on.”
BOY'S TENNIS
Little Lions dominate singles play
ALTOONA — State College swept the five singles matches as it defeated Altoona 5-2 on Tuesday to improve to 2-0.
The Little Lions dropped just 14 games in the five matches, with Alex Robinson at No. 1, Chris Borden at No. 2, Anurag Kumar at No. 3, Blake Gregory at No. 4 and Alex Gregory at No. 5 earning straight-set victories. Kumar didn't drop a game in his victory over Scott Andrews.
State College, which also defeated Altoona in last year’s District 6 final, returns to action today against Indian Valley.
GIRL'S TRACK & FIELD
P-O picks up two victories
SPRING MILLS — Triple winner Kaylee Adams powered Philipsburg- Osceola to victories over Penns Valley and Lewistown in a tri-meet on Tuesday.
Adams prevailed in the 100 (13.1), long jump (15-11) and triple jump (32-6.5) for the Lady Mounties, who defeated Penns Valley 80.5-69.5 and Lewistown 106.5-43. The Lady Rams downed the Lady Panthers 108.5-41.5
Alison Patrick added first-place finishes in the 400 (1:04.4) and pole vault (7-6) for P-O.
For Penns Valley, Shannon Yarger captured the 1,600 (5:33.8) and 3,200 (12:45.8) and was part of the Lady Rams’ winning 3,200-meter relay team.
BEA, Bellefonte begin seasons
MARTINSBURG — Bald Eagle Area and Bellefonte started their seasons with a tri-meet Tuesday at Central. BEA defeated Bellefonte 93-53 and fell to Central 94- 55. The Scarlet Dragons also defeated BEA 94-55.
BEA’s Danielle Reese won the long jump with a leap of 14-11/ 2 while Bellefonte’s Danielle Dombek won the 3,200 in 13.22.
BOY'S TRACK & FIELD
P-O debuts with sweep
SPRING MILLS — Philipsburg-Osceola started off its 2009 season with a 78-68 victoy over Penns Valley in addition to edging Lewistown 74-72 Tuesday while Lewistown squeaked past Penns Valley 73-72.
Dusty Golding was a triple-winner while leading the Mounties with first place finishes in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and discus with Penns Valley’s Matt Brooker also winning three events while claiming the 1,600, 800 and 3,200
P-O’s Brad Rocco was a double-winner in the triple jump and pole vault.
John Ventura led the Rams by winning the shot put, Garry Schwier won the javelin and McCade Lynch took the high jump with Brian Buciorwinning the long jump for P-O.
Eagles pick up a win
MARTINSBURG — Bald Eagle Area defeated Bellefonte 109-40 and fell to Central 118-32 during a tri-meet Tuesday.
Jon Gingrich had a big meet for the Eagles, winning the 110 high hurdles by clocking 16.5 and tossing the shot put 46 feet.Luke Brackenwas also a double winner for BEA, leading the pack in the 300 hurdles and 200-meter dash.
