Outdoor and indoor recreation options abound

Ice-skating is a winter tradition, and local skaters can find indoor ice at the newly opened Pegula Ice Arena on University Drive on Penn State’s campus.

Despite a busy ice schedule with Penn State now playing both women’s and men’s Division I hockey, the arena offers public skating times and skate rentals.

Here’s the arena’s public skating schedule:

•  Friday, Nov. 29: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

•  Saturday, Nov. 30: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The schedule for the rest of the year is not complete, according to arena staff.

Open skate times depend on the schedule of other events.

The arena also offers hockey times from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday to Friday with an exception on Nov. 29 from 4:45 p.m. to 6:45 pm. Times in December may change. For those, skaters are required to wear a helmet with a cage.

For those interested in skiing, sledding or snow tubing, Tussey Mountain is a popular choice.

Tussey also offers lessons for beginners and experienced ski and snowboarders.

There are seven trails and five lifts. Tussey Mountain offers night skiing in season. Adventurous types can tackle a variety of boxes, rails, pipes and jumps at the terrain park.

•  Tubing: Tussey features 100 snowtubes and tubing lift, with 1,000-foot tubing lanes.

When there’s snow, tubing is offered from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and holidays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Aaron Weyman, director of marketing, said the resort is aiming to open by mid-December, depending on the weather.
