What’s in store for 2013? First Night State College event encourages resolutions

Those with New Year’s resolutions on their minds can contribute to a new, interactive sculpture planned for this year’s First Night State College.

The event on Dec. 31 features ice sculptures on South Allen Street, the 5K Resolution Run, various performances, reindeer, carriage rides and more.

“The Bucket List” will be a new resolution sculpture, located in the Schlow Centre Region Library arcade, at Allen Street and Beaver Avenue.

“It’s very simple, like a giant chalkboard,” said Rick Bryant, First Night executive director.

Visitors can take a piece of chalk and finish the sentence that starts, “Before I die, I want to ...”

“Write the great American novel, do a marathon,” Bryant suggested. “They’re large enough that other people will see them.”

Because of the size of the First Night audience, Bryant said an attendant will wipe off the sculpture occasionally, making room for more bucket list items.

This year’s First Night also will offer some Penn State basketball promotions. While outdoor events are free, a $10 First Night button will give visitors admission to the indoor performances. They’ll also provide basketball ticket discounts over the holidays.

Bryant said he’s hoping to have coaches Patrick Chambers and Coquese Washington act as celebrity leaders of the 5K, which starts at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of College Avenue and Allen Street.

Performances this year will include three Vaudeville acts, including The Gizmo Guys, comedy jugglers from New York City. The group will perform at the State Theatre at 6:30, 8 and 10 p.m.

“All the people we’re having are really quite talented,” Bryant said.
