Centre County best bets for week of June 12-19


Ferguson Township police officers will teach young bicyclists the basics when it comes to safety at the 2015 Ferguson Township Police Bike Rodeo. Bicycle registrations and safety inspections will also be provided at the event. This year’s rodeo also features a silent auction and bike sale hosted by the Centre County United Way in partnership with Ferguson Township.

“Heritage Brass” will perform favorites from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s on the north lawn of the South Hills School of Business and Technology during the 2015 Music Picnic Series. The free outdoor concerts are held rain or shine every Sunday during the summer. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and a picnic supper. Local veterans organizations will join in hosting the State College Elks Flag Day ceremony. Community members are encouraged to bring their unserviceable American flags for proper disposal.

A reception will be held for the new John Mangan Retrospective at the HUB-Robeson Gallery. Mangan, who taught drawing and painting for 20 years through Penn State’s Continuing Education program, died in September. He exhibited his work frequently at several venues throughout Central Pennsylvania and left behind an extensive collection of drawings, paintings and prints. The exhibit runs through July 18.
