One of the Greatest Video Games of All Time Is Finally Getting a Sequel

This past weekend was full of video game announcements, reveals, and news, thanks to the not-E3-but basically-E3 summer season. While a lot of eyes were on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at Summer Game Fest and Gears of War: E-Day at the Xbox Games Showcase, the Xbox Games Showcase was also where the sequel to one of the all-time great video games was finally shown.

Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase with a teaser trailer, Persona 6, the long-awaited sequel to Persona 5, was finally (and very briefly) shown. The barely one-minute trailer set a creepy tone, taking place mostly in a graveyard, and also highlighted the black and green color motif of the title.

The teaser did not reveal a release date or provide any information on when fans may get more information.

Additionally,Persona 4 Revival, a remake of Persona 4 Golden, was given a longer trailer that included gameplay, spotlighted new combat features, and announced a release date - February 18, 2027.

It's possible the release date for Persona 6 was not revealed, so Atlus and Sega can put all focus on Persona 4 Revival for now. Still, if a previous pattern repeats itself, fans may not have too much longer to wait for Persona 6.

Back in 2024, Persona 3 Reload was released in February, and then Metaphor: ReFantzatio, a new IP from Atlus and Sega, was released in October of that same year. If the same marketing strategy applies, it's plausible that Persona 6 may release in fall 2027.

Persona 6 has a lot riding on it as the follow-up to what is widely considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Persona 5 (and its enhanced version release, Persona 5 Royal) have served as inspiration for a lot of RPGs in recent years, especially in regards to presentation, style, and UI.

According to Metacritic, Persona 5 Royal is sitting at an impressive 95 metascore, making it the best-reviewed game of 2020, even over The Last of Us Part 2.

Persona 6 is currently in development with no announced release date.
