State College’s Pregnancy Resource Clinic hosts a weekly support group for newly pregnant or parenting moms called Pregnancy and Parenting Connection. Held weekly in the home of a trained client advocate, the goal of the group is to encourage, empower and educate mothers as they make informed life choices.
The support group aims to reaffirm that their role as mothers truly matters in the life of their children. Mothers of all ages, origin, economic status, religion, education and marital status attend. While catching up on the past week’s events in their lives, the mothers eat a home-cooked meal made by volunteers. Guest speakers provide encouragement to the group by teaching and sharing their own experiences as mothers. They provide advice on topics such as breast-feeding, providing proper nutrition from infancy through the toddler years, reading to their baby, exercising during and after pregnancy, budgeting, having healthy relationships, cooking for a family and growing spiritually, just to name a few. On occasion, fathers are invited to join in on the fun at picnics, game nights or an occasional night out to watch a Spike’s baseball game.
Located just a few blocks from Penn State, the Pregnancy Resource Clinic’s main population served is Penn State students and their families. The Pregnancy and Parenting Connection support group has a global impact, touching the lives of locals as well as those from abroad.
Through our closed Facebook group, the mothers are encouraged to connect with each other in between their support group meetings. A few mothers recently wrote their appreciation of the group:
• “Meeting weekly with other babies and moms has helped my son develop better social skills and has given me the opportunity to learn from other mothers’ experiences. Group is more than a weekly meeting, it’s a community.” — Pleasant Gap member
• “PPC helped me to relate with other moms and realize that children are a blessing. Watching my child grow along with all of the other babies who are very close in age is just awesome!” — Paxtoville member
• “PPC has been a great emotional support when I needed it. Meeting other moms and babies is wonderful, you learn that your concerns are the same for all those who deeply love their little ones. It has even helped me to practice my English.” — Santiago, Chile member
The Pregnancy and Parenting Connection support group would not be possible without the support of our donor community as well as volunteers who make each evening special for the mothers who attend. Our hope is to provide a place that is safe, nurturing, and encouraging to our transient community as we find many people here in our area disconnected from family and friends from back home. Thank you.
