For some, one of the best parts of getting a little bit older is getting a discount because of it.
Sandy Turner, of Philipsburg, gets positively giddy when she sees “senior discount” at the Rowland Theatre in Philipsburg.
When she takes her grandkids to the movies, she pays the same $5 admission they do and rolls her $1 savings over into her popcorn money.
Other movie theaters in the area are just as accommodating to seniors. At the UEC Movies 12 and College 9, moviegoers 62 and older pay just $7 for evening features, a $2.75 savings.
Savings at restaurants are often well publicized. Many chain restaurants, such as Denny’s and IHOP, have special senior menus offering more manageable portions at more affordable rates. Some, including Papa John’s, Outback Steakhouse and Dunkin’ Donuts, offer special deals for AARP members. Others are more individual, even when it comes to a nationally known brand. The State College TGI Friday’s, for example, offers a 15 percent senior discount to those older than 65.
Not sure if your favorite restaurant cuts seniors a break? Check out the website, give the place a call or just ask when you drop in.
But restaurants aren’t the only ones who appreciate senior citizens’ business.
Stores and other businesses often reward their older customers, too. Clothes Mentor on Rolling Ridge Drive gives shoppers 55 and older a 15 percent discount on Tuesdays. East Coast Health and Fitness offers special Silver & Fit classes and discounts.
Even the government gets into the discount act.
Want to go camping? Stay at a Pennsylvania state park and the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources will give adventurers 62 and older a $4.50 discount on a basic campsite.
Just like to drive around? The Department of Motor Vehicles offers seniors $10 registration on noncommercial vehicles if you are retired and on Social Security or a pension, with an income below $19,200.
Maybe the best discount of all comes from Penn State. The university’s PSU Go60 program lets those older than 60 take classes for free on a space-available basis.
