Elizabeth Goreham likes candy.
Random, I know, but it seemed best to start with something small at the top because once you’ve established that somebody is the mayor of the borough of State College it feels a little bit like peaking in the first act.
Nevertheless, that is the title that’s currently at the top of Goreham’s resume. Below, we reveal exactly what kind of candy the mayor likes, her best Halloween costume and her favorite spot in State College.

A: To write funny stories.
Q: How old were you when you got your first job? What was it?
A: I was 16. I was hired for the summer as a car hop for our local A&W Root Beer stand, and paid 50 cents an hour plus tips.
Q: What time does your alarm clock go off in the morning?
A: We don’t set the alarm and wake up between 6 and 7:30 a.m.
Q: Where is your favorite spot in State College?
A: In the fall, my own street — Irvin Avenue — where the beautiful old tulip trees meet in the middle of the street to form a canopy of brilliant golden leaves. The sight always makes me feel happy to be alive.
Q: What’s the last book that you read?
A: “Venus of Khala-Kanti” by Angele Kingue, my friend and a professor at Bucknell University.
Q: What would your version of a perfect day look like?
A: To experience our community with a full appreciation and acceptance of our rich diversity — students and non-students, rich and poor, locals and internationals, whites and people of color, educated and uneducated, religious and non-religious — this would be a perfect place where anything is possible.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
A: As mayor I get to meet people who volunteer their time to protect our water supply, deliver meals to the home bound, provide free health care, raise money for refugees, etc., etc. These people — my neighbors — restore my faith in the future and inspire me.
Q: What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever worn?
A: The time my husband and I dressed as each other. My “beard” was pulled-apart cotton balls fixed on my face with Elmer’s glue; it itched incessantly. Jack was driven nuts by the panty hose he had agreed to wear.
Q: What’s your favorite kind of candy?
A: Dark chocolate salt caramels!
