Missing Beech Creek man found dead

The man swept away by floodwaters on Thursday was found dead by three kayakers Saturday afternoon in Bald Eagle Creek in Clinton County.

State police in Lamar said Claude Rupert, 86, was found on an island in the creek around 2:30 p.m. Police said the location was in Bald Eagle Township, but there was no specific information beyond that.

Rupert was pronounced dead by the Clinton County coroner, police said.

Rupert was trying to save an ATV when he was pulled into the swollen Little Sugar Run in Beech Creek Township.

Rescue crews searched Thursday into the early morning hours Friday before breaking. They resumed later in the morning and continued until 7:30 p.m. Friday, when the search was called off for good.

Water rescue crews from Allegheny and Cambria counties combed through the muddy waters Friday looking for the man.

The storm whose flooding swept away Rupert dropped 5 to 7 inches of rain in an hour. Floods ravaged roads around Beech Creek, closing state Route 150 north of town and even causing a Norfolk Southern train to stop because of washed out tracks near Blanchard in Centre County.
