Construction delays have forced the Mountaintop Area Pool in Snow Shoe to stay closed for the season.
Pool officials had hoped to open for a late opening in early July after renovations to the decking were completed. But because of rainy weather and other setbacks, HRI Inc., of State College, cannot pour new concrete and finish the job until September.
Tom Taylor, the pool association president, said the decision was “disappointing” but necessary. HRI, which had been donating its labor and some materials, couldn’t get to the pool with the weather delays.
“They’ve done a lot for us,” Taylor said. “Certainly there’s no blame that should be placed on them.”

Anyone who bought a 2013 membership is entitled to a refund or permitted to use the membership for next summer. In addition, all lifeguards hired for the season can receive a refund for money paid to take lifeguarding courses, and are welcome to work at the pool next year.
Taylor and several other volunteers led a successful grassroots effort to restore and reopen the pool last year after it closed for the 2011 season from a lack of funds and volunteers. Overall, $140,000 was raised, including a $10,000 county tourism and recreation grant given this spring.
Once the decking is finished, Taylor said, the pool will be ready for next summer.
