Penn State student falls from balcony, breaks leg

A 19-year-old Penn State student was injured after falling off a second-floor balcony early Friday in downtown State College.

State College police said Andrew Shearer fell 16 feet from the Palmerton Apartments building on West Beaver Avenue and apparently broke his leg.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the fall, which happened just before 1 a.m. Friday.

Investigators have identified two people who furnished alcohol to Shearer. Charges may be filed against the pair, who police did not identify, when an investigation is complete.

Shearer was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center and then to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

He is a undergraduate student at Penn State studying engineering, according to the university directory.

It’s the second time in less than a week that a student fell from a balcony on Beaver Avenue.

Conor F. MacMannis died early Saturday after falling from a ninth-floor balcony at the Penn Tower apartment building.

Police are still investigating that incident, and have said a synthetic drug being sold as “acid” may have been in factor in MacMannis’ death.
