Each Monday, the Centre Daily Times will publish an installment in our “Share our Heritage” series, featuring photos from Centre County’s past. Today’s photo is from Bob Ginter, of Bellefonte.
Ginter wrote: “This photo was taken in Harmony Forge, between Bellefonte and Milesburg. I am nearly 60, and even as a child, I know it was out of business. The building must have been taken down in the ’50s or ’60s, the smokestacks came down later in a controlled explosion.
“The only things you can see now are parts of the foundation, only from the railroad side of the creek. The dam, removed in ’10, provided some of the power needed. My late grandfather told me during the worst of the Depression they were still in business. He unloaded ore cars with a shovel for 10¢ a car. Good money those days.”
Readers can contribute to the “Share our Heritage” series by sharing their own photos. Just drop off or mail copies of the photos to Centre Daily Times, 3400 E.
