Winter weather increased blood drives

Severe winter weather across the country this year has forced the cancellation of about 770 American Red Cross blood drives, resulting in 25,000 uncollected blood donations, according to the Red Cross.

Locally, Penn State blood drives lost more than 150 units of blood.

Therefore, additional blood drives to help restock supplies have been slated, and those who can donate — especially O-negative, O-positive, B-negative and A-negative blood — are asked to do so.

Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are always accepted if possible. Visit to view a schedule of THON blood drives and to make an appointment.
