Freezing rain closes area schools, slows commutes Wednesday

The area is under a freezing rain advisory Wednesday, and all five Centre County school districts — Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola and State College — are closed.

Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, CLC Charter School, Grace Lutheran Preschool and Kindergarten, NHS School in State College, Park Forest Day Nursery, St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy, State College Friends School, Young Scholars of Central PA, South Hills School of Business and Technology also are closed.

Grace Prep announced a two-hour delay.

The advisory, which expires at noon, was issued by the National Weather Service in State College on Tuesday afternoon.

NWS is predicting up to a tenth of an inch of ice over the region.

This morning, an accident on Interstate 80 closed eastbound lanes between Exits 123 and 133, according to PennDOT. The speed limit has been restricted to 45 mph on I-80 and I-99 in Centre County, PennDOT said.

The entire Pennsylvania Turnpike also is under a 45 mph restriction, according to the Turnpike Commission.

Two flights at University Park Airport were canceled Wednesday morning.

Minor power outages near Curtin Township were reported by West Penn Power on Wednesday morning.

Winds are expected to be light and variable Wednesday, and temperatures should reach into the lower 30s in the afternoon, according to NWS.
