State College police are seeing an increase in attempts to scam college students looking to sublet their apartments for the summer.
Lt. Chris Fishel said his department is seeing at least one call a week reporting attempts to perpetrate a scam. A common version includes agreeing to take the sublet, sending a deposit check for more than the amount of the agreement and asking for the difference to be sent back in cash or money order.
“The closer we get to summer, the more people are looking to sublet,” said Fishel, who urged students placing sublet ads on Craigslist or other forums to be cautious.
