The Philipsburg-Osceola Area school board took the first steps toward several building improvement projects.
The board recently approved a proposal with Hayes Large Architects for professional design services for several capital improvements at Philipsburg-Osceola Area Senior High and Osceola Mills Elementary. The cost of the contract was $26,500.
“The high school project is for the upper parking lot. We are going to repave it and relocate the lights to the side of the lot instead of inside the lot,” said Superintendent Gregg Paladina.
A second project at that building is also included.
“We are going to replace all of the seating in the auditorium, paint it, and re-floor it,” said Paladina.
Principal Robin Stewart said the upgrades will also include handicapped seating and accessibility.
The elementary project is a partial replacement of the roof.
“These projects are planned for summer or early fall and are part of our overall plan to revitalize our older facilities,” Paladina said.
All of the items have been on buildings and grounds supervisor Don Blake’s radar for years. In 2013, the parking lot was one of several items trimmed from proposed capital improvements to pass a budget with no tax increase.
“They definitely have needed done for a long time,” said Paladina. “Every year we will prioritize our list of capital projects. These three were the biggest priority to us. OME’s roof needs replaced so we put that in front of the high school canopy. The auditorium’s seats are in disrepair. Don has done a nice job of trying to maintain these things, but the maintenance budget took a hit during the budget crunch.”
A second contract with Hayes Large for $22,650 is for an architectural study for improvements to Memorial Field’s facilities, especially the fieldhouse. The money to complete the actual work for that project is being raised by the district’s newly created educational foundation.
No timeline for start or completion has been established, as it would be dictated by fundraising, foundation committee members said at a meeting last month.
