Hundreds of traffic citations issued over weekend

Centre County’s Memorial Day weekend might have seen lots of barbecues and solemn ceremonies, but it also saw plenty of traffic tickets. What it was short on was fatalities from holiday revelry.

According to state police at Rockview, aggressive traffic enforcement conducted from Friday to Monday was put in place to “reduce the amount of vehicle crashes and aggressive drivers during this period of high traffic volume.”

Police said the effort contributed to the fact that just six crashes happened over the weekend.

Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers sent out a statement Tuesday confirming that there were no traffic fatalities during the three-day weekend. He added that he would “like to commend area drivers for having a safe weekend.”

That doesn’t mean all of the drivers were safe.

Rockview troopers made 11 driving-under-the-influence arrests over the four-day period of the targeted enforcement. They wrote 721 traffic citations, including 35 for failure to wear seat belts, and issued 258 warnings.
