Event to focus on suicide prevention, awareness

Suicide survivors will share their stories with the public Wednesday in hopes of helping others.

From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, the Jana Marie Foundation will host its second annual Centre County Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day event with an evening of “hope, healing and remembrance.”

It will be held in conjunction with the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Active Minds of Penn State.

Last month, Centre County commissioners declared Sept. 10 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day, and the week of Sept. 7 as Suicide Prevention Week in Centre County. The dates coincide with similar national events.

The event will include live music, discussions around art and writing as a way of expression, an art exhibit, a candlelight vigil and more, said Marisa Vicere Brown, president and founder of the Jana Marie Foundation.

The Jana Marie Foundation was founded after Brown’s sister Jana, committed suicide about three years ago at the age of 30. It’s a way to help keep her sister’s memory alive, and spread awareness and outreach for suicide prevention, Brown said.
