State police warn of phone scam seeking donations for fallen troopers

State police at Lamar warned the public Monday about a phone scam seeking donations tied to the recent shootings of two state troopers in eastern Pennsylvania.

Police have received reports of a purported organization calling itself “The State Police Assistance Program” that uses a phone number with a 570 area code to ask for donations of $50 or $100.

The voice will be from a computer-based telephone and may be hard to understand, police said.

The calls are fraudulent because state police do not solicit donations, police said.

Anyone who receives a call from the scam is asked to contact state police at 570-726-6000.
