Two injured in U.S. 322 school bus crash

A school bus driver received a traffic citation Monday after a four-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 322 in Potter Township.

Richard Shutt, 69, of Spring Mills, was cited for failure to maintain a safe speed stemming from the afternoon crash. According to state police at Rockview, Shutt could not slow down in time to avoid hitting a car driven by James Knapp, 74, of State College. Police said Knapp was slowing down for stopped traffic.

Shutt’s school bus, which did not have any passengers, crashed into the back of Knapp’s car, pushing it into a car driven by Margaret Burkey, 70, of Yeagertown, police said.

Knapp’s car came to a rest partially in the westbound lane, where it was sideswiped by an approaching school bus, driven by Linda Lamey, 59, of Spring Mills, police said.

Knapp and his passenger, Bonnie Knapp, 72, were taken by a Penns Valley EMS ambulance to Mount Nittany Medical Center, both with moderate injuries, according to police.

Burkey and her passenger, Beth Koontz, 44, of Burnham, had minor injuries but needed no treatment, police said.

Neither Shutt nor Lamey and her 74-year-old passenger, whom police did not identify, were injured.
