Centre County names Jeff Wharran as new emergency management chief

The Centre County Emergency Management Agency has a new director.

County commissioners unanimously approved Jeff Wharran as the EMA director Tuesday. The appointment came after careful and thoughtful consideration, Chairman Steve Dershem said. The position had been vacant for six months.

Wharran, a Bellefonte resident, is a U.S. Navy veteran who worked for 22 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, Dershem said. He served as a state police fire marshal for seven counties and is certified in fire and explosion investigations and firearms instruction.

Wharran said he looks forward to serving Centre County and assisting the first responders.

“I still have a lot to learn about the position,” he said, “but I look forward to the challenge.”

Wharran assumes office June 29, commissioners said.
