It was a quiet crowd at Rotelli Pizza & Pasta on Saturday morning.
But a group of posters hanging in the restaurant spoke volumes.
Duquesne Brewing Co. publicly released the artwork for its Paterno Legacy Series Beer that honors late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
“We did it for all the right reasons and it’s something we’re really proud of,” Paterno’s son Jay Paterno said. “I think it’s more about what’s in the can, and it’s not just a matter of something making money. It’s also about giving back.”
Paterno said proceeds from beer sales will go toward a charity chosen by his mother, Sue Paterno. That organization has not been selected.
About a year ago, brewery President Mark Dudash approached the Paterno family about crafting a beer in honor of JoePa.
A brewmaster created a flavor Dudash said is simple, but smooth. It’s considered a red Vienna lager with a hint of caramel, European hops and moderate carbonation.
The beer will be released in a 12-pack through wholesalers in Pennsylvania the week of Aug. 15. It will also be sold in Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington D.C.
“We hoped it would be successful, and now we’re hoping we can brew enough,” Paterno said.
A price has not been determined. Dudash said the cost is in the hands of the sellers, but he hopes it will be competitive with other specialty beers.
Dudash said that in State College, patrons will find the beer at W.R. Hickey Beer Distributors, 1321 E. College Ave., which plans to ship to other wholesalers in the area.
Duquesne Brewing is a Pittsburgh-based company. The Paterno Legacy Series will be brewed in Latrobe, the hometown of Sue Paterno.
