Alcohol suspected in State College pedestrian crash

Alcohol may have been a factor in a pedestrian-vehicle accident Sunday in State College.

According to State College police, Daniel Marafino, 29, of West Monroe, N.Y., was walking along the 400 block of West College Avenue approaching the intersection at South Atherton Street. As he was crossing at the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection, he was struck by Christopher McCully, 30, of Philipsburg.

McCully said he was heading southbound on South Atherton, police said, when he crested the hill and saw Marafino run out in front of him. He tried to brake, but slid on the wet road.

Marafino was crossing on the side of the street where there are construction barricades, police said. Sidewalks on this side are closed, with no accessible sidewalk to cross to.

Marafino was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center with injuries to his left side, police said. He was “observed with signs of alcohol consumption” with a “moderate odor of alcohol about his breath ... and his eyes were bloodshot and watery.”
