Atherton Place, Dunkin’ Donuts to open in State College

A Dunkin’ Donuts and new residential housing will open soon on South Atherton Street.

The apartments in Atherton Place, which are fully rented, will open April 25. Dunkin’ Donuts, which will open by Friday, is in the first floor of the building. There will be no other commercial tenants.

Atherton Place, a 12-apartment building at 1311 S. Atherton St., will provide affordable housing. Developer Ara Kervandjian was required to provide the affordable housing due to a State College ordinance that at least 10 percent of a housing project be designated for affordable housing.

Kervandjian is developing The Metropolitan in downtown State College. He had the option of creating the housing off-site if it wasn’t included in The Metropolitan project.

Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee Eric May, who bought the rights to develop the chain in the region about a year ago, said it is the first Dunkin’ Donuts shop he will own in State College. He is also interested in expanding the chain to North Atherton Street and Bellefonte.

He believes the South Atherton location, which will have a drive-through, will succeed.

“It’s on the a.m. side traffic, which is really nice,” May said. “It’s also a good residential area, and we’re excited about being in and around State College in general. It’s a growing area, and all of those factors will work really well together.”

The May family was named Dunkin’ Donuts Operator of the Year in 2011. The family has franchised the chain in northeastern Pennsylvania for over a decade.

May said the eatery will have 20 to 25 seats and will employ about 25 people.

Kervandjian spokesman Vinh Vuong said The Metropolitan’s grand opening is scheduled for May 4, 2017.

They did not have comment on potential commercial tenants of The Metropoitan, but said the development is generating “a lot of interest.”
