Stephanie Skipper has gotten a taste of fame.
The State College native will be featured at 8 p.m. Monday on NBC’s ‘The Voice,’ though the show leaked her performance to build interest in the episode.
Skipper’s rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece” began to go viral on YouTube more than 24 hours before her episode airs on channel 6. The video has been watched more than 1.6 million times in two days.
“Thank you for all your kindness and encouragement as I throw my hat back in the game,” Skipper said on Facebook Sunday when she realized her performance was No. 14 on YouTube’s trending list. “I realize I basically disappeared in 2013 when I retired the Stephanie Smith brand. I was sad, discouraged and exhausted and needed a little time to recover. It’s a new day, and although I haven’t figured anything out I have learned so much about myself and living a full life. I can’t wait to share this new adventure with you. Grace, peace, love and hope to you and your dreams.”
Skipper’s performance of judge Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece” brought Clarkson to tears, and then on stage to hug the aspiring singer. Judges Adam Levine, Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton praised Skipper who thanked Clarkson for writing the song and said it “means a lot to me.”
The show’s promo did not reveal Skipper’s choice as her coach, but Shelton and Levine tried to persuade her to choose one of them.
“You brought my attention to the really important thing, which is the song and the story and what’s actually happening up there,” Levine said. “The heart, the soul is there.”
