LOS ANGELES -- Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is erring on the side of caution. He said Wednesday morning that he will coach Thursday's Rose Bowl against Southern California from the press box.

The 82-year-old, who USC counterpart Pete Carroll called "a living Benjamin Button" earlier Wednesday, is six weeks removed from hip replacement surgery. He said he worried that spending three to four hours standing on the sideline, as he had hoped to do, might be too much. Paterno added it is unlikely he will join the team in the locker room at halftime, remaining in the box instead.

The Nittany Lions (11-1) meet the Trojans (11-1) at 5:10 p.m. ET Thursday.
