Bellefonte man convicted of rape in party incident

A 23-year-old Bellefonte man was found guilty on all charges Tuesday evening for the 2011 rape of a young woman at a party in State College.

The Centre County District Attorney’s Office said Philip J. Giunta II was convicted on felony charges of rape, sexual assault and aggravated assault without consent and by forcible compulsion.

State College police alleged Giunta approached the woman at a party at around 2 a.m. on Sept. 5, 2011, took her hand and told her to follow him. He allegedly knew the woman from high school, but they were not friends.

When the woman refused, Giunta pulled grabbed her arm and pulled her around the side of the house. He knocked the woman down and began raping her, police said.

Police said the woman noticed an open window and tried to call out to a friend, but she was unable to get anyone’s attention.

The woman was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment of injuries she suffered during the assault.

According to court documents, Giunta was charged with the assault in June.

He was found guilty after a two-day trial this week before Centre County Judge Pamela A. Ruest. Giunta was represented by attorney Patrick Klena.

Assistant District Attorney Sean McGraw prosecuted the case.
