State College police investigating kidnapping phone scam

State College police are warning of an apparent phone scam in which suspects say they have kidnapped a family member and are demanding a ransom.

Police said the scammers claimed a family member was abducted after a car accident and will be killed unless cash for repairs is wired immediately.

The alleged kidnappers demanded $1,500 from one cell phone user. The person called police, who were able to locate the relative and confirm his safety.

Police said the scammers appear to be working off a basic script but add details as a victim provides information about his or her relative.

The suspects appear to be calling from Puerto Rico using a prepaid cell phone, according to police.

Police advised residents who receive similar calls not to panic and to immediately call 911 to have police confirm the safety of relatives.
