Penn State graduate dies after collapsing during Pittsburgh half-marathon

A 23-year-old Penn State alumnus died after collapsing during the half-marathon competition of the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday.

Multiple reports identified him as 2012 graduate Kyle Johnson. He collapsed near paramedics at the 12-mile mark near Duquesne University, Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Michael Huss told reporters Sunday. Officials said Johnson was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy by the Allegheny County coroner’s office is scheduled for Monday.

Race director Patrice Matamoros said on the marathon’s website that “this is a loss for the entire marathon family and our hearts and prayers go out to his family at this time.”
